At Westfield High, theater kid Jason Tanner and star quarterback Sean Robinson are navigating a secret romance. While Jason lives unapologetically himself, Sean remains closeted and hides their relationship to protect his reputation from his father and the football team.
Tension escalates when Jason’s best friend, Sarah, unknowingly asks for Jason’s help to court Sean. Jason decides to use Sarah as a "beard,". Meanwhile, Leslie, the school’s mean girl, starts a rumor mill that inevitably fracture the boys' bond, leading Sean to pull away from Jason.
The story takes a tragic turn when Jason is a victim of an assault and hospitalized. In the aftermath, Sean and Sarah are forced to self-reflect and face their fears. Sarah finds the grace to forgive Jason for using her, and Sean finds the courage to come out to his father. The musical concludes with Sean being crowned Homecoming King. He publicly announces his love for Jason and reclaims his sexuality in solidarity to Jason's attack.
