If the writer of this autobiographical solo show were asked to describe herself in one word... she would probably instead offer you an extensive list of professional and personal failures. In this dark comedy, award-winning playwright Ilana Jael invites audiences to join her in cataloging these failures while reckoning with the ways that her childhood diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome and the associated “symptoms” of this “disorder” have shaped her attitude towards herself and towards the world. As she laments the fates of various physical objects she has literally destroyed through her total lack of common sense, she considers the ways in which her pronounced self-destructive tendencies could have arisen from a consuming need to “fit in” to neurotypical society. She also considers the many friendly, professional, and romantic relationships she has semi-wittingly sabotaged while celebrating her resilience and all she’s (somehow) managed to achieve.
