American History vs. American Idol is a hilarious, original musical comedy about a stuck up, know it all professor whose lecture is constantly interrupted by his own self-absorbed students, who perform over the top musical numbers in the absurd belief that by recording themselves, they can become internet stars.
Some actual history will be taught, including both our worst moments, and those times when unusual coalitions came together to drive America in a positive direction.
But, mostly, this is a comedy, one in which the jokes hit because they comment on the past and present at the same time: "Half of the Native Americans east of the Mississippi died of diseases we gave them by accident. Today, we honor the tragic memory of those dead Native Americans by refusing to vaccinate our children."
Funding for the show was provided by United Arts of Central Florida. The author is planning on adapting the show so it can be performed by High School theater groups. Comments are welcome.
